Totara is a relative slow growing tree capable of growing for 1,000 years or more, reaching 30 metres high and 2-3 in diameter. It has reasonable tolerance of cold and will grow to altitudes of 500-600 metres. It’s fruit is favoured by Kereru and Tui, native birds which disperse the seeds.
The seed is the visible green tip and the orange colour fruit sac is also nourishment for the generating seed.
Also much loved by Kereru and other native birds who then help seed dispersal over a wider area to the fruit bearing parent Totara.
